Bilevel positive airway pressure - Bilevel Positive Airway Pressure (or BiPAP) is a method of respiratory ventilation used primarily in the treatment of sleep apnea and various lung diseases. Unlike Continuous Positive Airway Pressure (CPAP), BiPAP uses an electronic circuit to monitor the patient's breathing, and provides two different pressures, a higher one during inhalation and a lower pressure during exhalation.

In sleep apnea, the patient's airway becomes restricted as their muscles relax naturally during sleep, which causes arousal from sleep.

Positive end-expiratory pressure - Positive end-expiratory pressure (PEEP) is a term used in mechanical ventilation to denote the amount of pressure above atmospheric pressure present in the airway at the end of the expiratory cycle. The equivalent in a spontaneously breathing patient is CPAP.
